Redefining Participation in Nigeria’s Upstream Sector

As Nigeria’s oil and gas landscape evolves, with international oil companies divesting from onshore and shallow water assets, Chappal Energies represents a new generation of indigenous operators driving continuity and growth. The company focuses on deepwater and brownfield upstream investments designed to unlock the potential of mature assets and strengthen Nigeria’s energy security.

Through a strategic acquisition, the purchase of Equinor Nigeria Energy Company in December 2024, Chappal established a world class portfolio anchored by significant gas resources. This milestone reflects the increasing role of capable African operators in reshaping upstream operations and advancing the Federal Government’s Decade of Gas agenda.

History and Expertise

Established to capture opportunities created by the global rebalancing of upstream portfolios, Chappal Energies is focused on deepening local participation in Nigeria’s energy sector. The company’s trajectory has been defined by decisive transactions and a disciplined growth strategy.

In December 2024, Chappal completed its acquisition of Equinor Nigeria Energy Company, securing:

  1. 53.85% ownership of OML 128, which includes a 20.21% interest in the Agbami deepwater field, operated by Chevron and producing since 2008.
  2. Operatorship of OML 129, home to the undeveloped Bilah, Sehki, and Nnwa Doro gas discoveries, which rank among the most promising gas accumulations in Nigeria’s deepwater.

This acquisition positioned Chappal as one of the few African-led operators with a presence in Nigeria’s deepwater domain, an arena historically dominated by international oil majors. It marked a significant milestone in the evolution of the country’s upstream landscape.

Strategic Outlook

Supported by the enabling environment of the Petroleum Industry Act, Chappal Energies is charting a course to accelerate gas development and advance Nigeria’s transition toward a gas-powered economy.

The company’s near-term focus is on optimizing non operated production across existing assets, including a planned 2027/2028 infill drilling campaign, while progressing commercialization options for its operated gas resources.

Chappal’s broader ambition is to develop an integrated gas hub, aligned with NUPRC initiatives, to unlock deepwater gas resources that would otherwise remain commercially stranded. Development options under evaluation include a Floating LNG (FLNG) concept with condensate recovery, local LPG supply, and potential LNG exports.

In the long term, Chappal’s hub strategy integrates proven FLNG technology with modular upstream development solutions. Guided by disciplined investment, strategic collaboration, and a strong commitment to operational excellence and responsible resource development, Chappal Energies is contributing to the next phase of Nigeria’s upstream evolution, driving energy security, economic growth, and sustainable impact.
